Clients ask us this constantly: “Before we pay for design, what can we get for free?”
More than most people expect. Shopify maintains 23 free, official themes in its Theme Store. These are not trials or third-party templates with tracking scripts baked in. Shopify builds, security-patches, and keeps them compatible with new store features at zero cost, permanently.
This is the page we send clients before any design conversation starts. Share the link, shortlist a theme, then talk to us about customization.
Dawn vs. Horizon: Shopify’s Two Free Theme Families
All 23 free themes belong to one of two underlying architectures. Knowing the difference matters more than the color scheme:
| Dawn family (13 themes) | Horizon family (10 themes) | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 2021 (Shopify's original Online Store 2.0 reference theme) | 2025 (Shopify's next-generation architecture) |
| Editor flexibility | Good: sections and blocks | Better: nearly every element is a movable block, including on product and collection pages |
| App/tutorial compatibility | Excellent: most Shopify app docs and YouTube tutorials assume Dawn's structure | Growing, but still catching up |
| Best for | Merchants who want the most proven, most documented foundation | Merchants who want the newest editing experience and don't mind fewer third-party guides |
| Members | Dawn, Craft, Sense, Refresh, Origin, Studio, Ride, Colorblock, Crave, Taste, Spotlight, Trade, Publisher | Horizon, Savor, Ritual, Fabric, Heritage, Atelier, Tinker, Vessel, Pitch, Dwell |
If you’re not sure which to pick, start with Dawn or Horizon. Every other theme in each family is essentially a restyled preset of one of these two.

Which One Fits Your Store?
- Fashion & apparel: Dawn, Horizon, Colorblock, Fabric
- Beauty & wellness: Sense, Refresh, Ritual, Pitch
- Food & beverage: Crave, Taste, Refresh, Savor
- Jewelry, artisan & luxury goods: Craft, Heritage, Atelier, Vessel
- Home décor & lifestyle: Origin, Dwell, Fabric

How to Install a Free Theme on Your Store
- In your Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
- Scroll to Theme Library and click Add theme → Explore free themes, or open a theme’s link above and click Add to theme library.
- Click Preview to test it on a live demo before touching your store.
- Once added, it sits in your Theme Library and does not go live automatically.
- Click Customize to add your logo, colors, and content using Shopify’s visual editor.
- When you’re happy, click Publish. Only then does it replace your live storefront.
You can add several free themes to your library at once and compare them before committing; none go live until you hit Publish.
Free Theme vs. Custom Theme: When to Upgrade
Free themes are production-ready. Plenty of funded brands launch on Dawn or Horizon and stay there for years. Where they start to limit you:
- You need a layout Shopify’s editor can’t produce (non-standard product pages, unusual navigation, custom animations).
- You’re stacking five or more apps just to fake features a custom theme could build natively, which is usually what slows down your store in the first place.
- Your brand identity needs to feel unmistakably yours, not “recognizably Dawn with a different font.”
None of that means starting over. It usually means customizing the free theme’s Liquid code directly: you keep Shopify’s stability and app compatibility while removing the design ceiling.
Summary
Every theme on this list is official and permanently free, with no catch or hidden upsell. Pick a category match above, preview two or three candidates in your Theme Library, and publish whichever one takes the least work to look like your brand.
