Creating a new product listing from scratch in Shopify can be tedious—especially when configuring multi-tiered variants, metafield specifications, shipping dimensions, and detailed HTML formatting across dozens of similar products.
Instead of starting with a blank canvas every time, smart e-commerce teams use Shopify’s built-in Duplicate Product feature.
However, if you duplicate without caution, you risk creating duplicate SKU conflicts, broken SEO canonical URLs, and clashing inventory records.
In this tutorial, we cover the exact step-by-step method to duplicate existing products safely and update variant matrices with speed.
When Should You Duplicate a Product?
Duplicating an existing product is ideal when:
- Adding a new flavor, scent, or material finish that shares 80% of the same description, price, and specs as an existing product.
- Creating seasonal bundles or gift sets.
- Launching product variations that have different physical weights or packaging requirements.
Step 1: Duplicating the Product in Shopify Admin
- In your Shopify Admin, navigate to Products.
- Click on the product you want to use as a template.
- In the top action bar, click Duplicate (next to the More actions dropdown).
- A modal popup will appear:
- Title: Enter the exact title of your new product.
- Select Details to Copy:
- Check “Product images” if the product packaging or angle is similar and you only need to swap specific shots.
- Check “SKUs” only if you plan to edit them immediately (otherwise leave unchecked to prevent inventory collisions).
- Check “Barcodes” (usually uncheck, since new items require unique UPC/EANs).
- Set status: Choose Draft so the unfinished clone is not published live to customers before you finish editing!
- Click Duplicate product.
Step 2: Updating Titles, Descriptions & Media
Now that you are on the duplicated Draft product page:
- Title: Ensure the new product name is fully refined.
- Description: Update the copy to reflect unique ingredients, features, or measurements.
- Media: Delete photos that belong exclusively to the old item and upload the new product imagery.
Step 3: Modifying Variants & Option Attributes
If the new product has different variant options (e.g., changing colors or sizes):
- Scroll to the Variants section.
- Add / Remove Option Values:
- To add a new color: type the color name and hit enter.
- To delete an obsolete variant: click the trash icon next to that row.
- Assign Images: Click the image icon on each variant row to match it with the newly uploaded product photo.
- Update Pricing & Compare-At Prices: Adjust variant rates if specific finishes or sizes carry a surcharge.
Step 4: Regenerating Clean SKUs and Barcodes
Never leave identical SKUs between parent and duplicated items:
- Use a clear, systematic SKU format:
- Old Product:
SERUM-HYD-30ML - New Duplicate:
SERUM-NIT-30ML
- Old Product:
- Update the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN) field to ensure accurate barcode scanning at your warehouse or POS terminal.
Step 5: Critical SEO URL Handle Cleanup
When Shopify duplicates a product, it automatically generates the URL handle by appending -1 or -copy to the old URL.
Example:
- Old URL:
/products/intense-hydration-serum - Auto-generated duplicate handle:
/products/copy-of-intense-hydration-serum
Leaving this default handle looks unprofessional and harms organic search rankings:
- Scroll to the very bottom of the page to Search engine listing.
- Click Edit.
- In the URL handle field, rewrite it cleanly:
/products/overnight-repair-serum - Update the Meta title and Meta description to target the new product’s primary search intent.
Step 6: Set Status to Active & Publish
Once verified:
- Change Product status from Draft to Active.
- Under Publishing, verify which sales channels (Online Store, Shop app, Google, Facebook) should display the product.
- Click Save.
Summary
Duplicating products saves hours of manual catalog entry, but checking variant images, SKUs, and SEO handles ensures your store remains pristine, professional, and optimized for search.
