How to Reconnect or Transfer a Domain to a New Shopify Store

E-commerce businesses frequently rebuild their storefronts: moving from an outdated legacy setup to a fresh Shopify store, upgrading to Shopify Plus, or restructuring catalogs from scratch.

However, when you attempt to connect your primary domain (yourbrand.com) to your newly built store, Shopify often blocks you with this error message:

“This domain is already connected to another Shopify store.”

Because Shopify maps SSL certificates and routing tables to a single store at a time, you cannot simply add an active domain to a second store without properly detaching it from the old environment first.

Here is the exact step-by-step procedure to disconnect, reconnect, and transfer your custom domain safely with zero downtime.

Scenario A: You Have Access to the Old Shopify Store

If you can still log into the old or development Shopify store, this process takes under 2 minutes:

Step 1: Remove the Domain from the Old Store

  1. Log into your Old Shopify Admin.
  2. Go to Settings → Domains.
  3. Under your custom domain name, click Manage (or click on the domain row).
  4. Click Remove domain (or Delete).
  5. Confirm the deletion.

Once removed, Shopify’s internal routing cache releases the domain registration lock immediately.

Step 2: Connect the Domain to the New Store

  1. Log into your New Shopify Admin.
  2. Go to Settings → Domains.
  3. Click Connect existing domain.
  4. Type in your custom domain (yourbrand.com).
  5. Click Verify connection.
  6. The new store will immediately link and re-issue the automated SSL certificate.

Scenario B: You Lost Access to the Old Store or It Is Frozen

If the old store is cancelled, frozen due to non-payment, or belongs to a former agency/developer who is unresponsive, you can prove domain ownership to bypass the lock using DNS TXT verification:

  1. Log into your New Shopify Admin → Settings → Domains.
  2. Click Connect existing domain and enter your domain name.
  3. When the warning appears stating the domain is tied to another store, click “Verify ownership”.
  4. Shopify will generate a unique verification string:
    • Type: TXT
    • Host: @ or shopify_verification
    • Value: shopify-verification-[random-alphanumeric-hash]
  5. Open your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains/Squarespace, Hostinger, or Cloudflare).
  6. Add the new TXT record to your DNS records list.
  7. Return to Shopify and click Verify. Shopify will verify you own the domain at the registrar level and forcefully disconnect it from the orphaned store!

What About Third-Party Business Emails?

One of the biggest merchant fears during a store migration is: “Will my Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 business emails stop working?”

The answer is NO, as long as you follow this golden rule:

  • Only touch the A record (23.227.38.65) and CNAME record (shops.myshopify.com).
  • NEVER delete or edit your MX, SPF, or DKIM TXT records.

Email delivery relies entirely on MX records. As long as those remain untouched in your DNS registrar, your team will continue sending and receiving emails without interruption.

Post-Reconnection Checklist

Once the domain is verified on your new store:

  1. Set Primary Domain: Under Settings → Domains, make sure your apex or www version is selected as primary, and “Redirect all traffic to this domain” is checked.
  2. 301 URL Redirects: If your new store has different product or collection URL structures, upload your 301 URL redirect CSV in Online Store → Navigation → View URL Redirects to preserve existing Google search rankings.
  3. Google Search Console: Verify that the primary domain is active in GSC and submit the new store’s sitemap.xml.

Summary

Reconnecting a domain to a new Shopify store doesn’t require risking broken customer traffic or lost business emails. Following the proper detachment sequence ensures a painless transition.
