RTO Is Quietly Eating Your Shopify Margins — Here's How We Fix It With GoKwik

If you’re running a Shopify store in India, you already know the number that keeps founders up at night: Return to Origin (RTO).

Cash-on-delivery drives a huge share of orders for Indian D2C brands — but it also means a meaningful chunk of those orders never actually get delivered. The courier shows up, the customer doesn’t answer, doesn’t want it anymore, or never intended to accept it in the first place. The product ships back, you eat the shipping cost twice, and the “sale” was never a sale at all.

On top of that, Shopify’s native checkout — built for a US/EU, card-first market — doesn’t do much to help. No COD risk scoring. No address-prefill network. No India-specific payment nudges. It just… checks out.

This is the exact problem we now solve for clients by implementing GoKwik — a checkout and post-purchase platform built specifically for Indian D2C, already running on 15,000+ stores including boAt, Mamaearth, Levi’s India, and Noise.

Want the short version instead of reading all of this? Take our 2-minute checkout quiz — answer 5 questions about your COD mix and priorities, get an instant recommendation between GoKwik, Razorpay Magic Checkout, and Cashfree Checkout 360.

The problem, in numbers

  • COD still accounts for 50-70% of orders on most Indian D2C stores.
  • Industry-wide RTO rates on COD orders routinely run 20-30%.
  • Every returned order costs you shipping both ways, repackaging, and a shopper who’s now had a bad experience with your brand.
  • Shopify’s own checkout has no built-in tooling to address any of this — it’s the same experience whether you’re shipping to Mumbai or Minneapolis.

None of this shows up cleanly in your P&L as “RTO” — it shows up as thinner margins, inflated CAC (because a chunk of your “converted” customers never actually receive anything), and a logistics bill that never quite makes sense.

What GoKwik actually changes

GoKwik isn’t a single app — it’s a connected stack covering the whole post-click journey, built on a shared network of 200M+ verified Indian shoppers. The two pieces that matter most for RTO and conversion:

Kwik Checkout

A 1-click checkout that replaces Shopify’s default flow:

  • 85-90%+ address prefill for returning network shoppers via OTP/SSO — no more re-typing a full address on a cramped mobile keyboard.
  • RTO risk scoring with 70+ intervention types — block COD for high-risk shoppers, require partial prepaid, add CAPTCHA/OTP friction only where it’s actually needed.
  • Zero-cost payment offers from Paytm, CRED, Amazon Pay, MobiKwik and others — funded by the payment partners, not you, so it’s pure conversion lift.
  • Published results: 40% conversion uplift, 85%+ address prefill, 40% reduction in RTO.

Kwik Ship + Return Prime

  • AI-based carrier selection and NDR (non-delivery report) management via WhatsApp and automated calling — so a failed delivery attempt gets resolved instead of silently becoming an RTO.
  • Self-serve returns/exchange portal that converts a return into a store-credit exchange instead of a pure loss.

Kwik Engage (the easy add-on)

This one’s undersold by calling it just “cart recovery WhatsApp flows” — it’s an omnichannel engagement and support platform (WhatsApp, Email, SMS, Instagram, Facebook, RCS, all in one inbox), with an AI chatbot that resolves 80%+ of customer queries autonomously, plus AI voice calling for COD/cart/failed-payment recovery. Published numbers: 85% open rates, 20%+ recovered carts, 90% message delivery via AI-powered retries. No checkout changes required, which is usually where we start with clients who want to see results before touching their core checkout flow.

One real result, not just a published benchmark: True Elements’ Co-Founder & CEO Puru Gupta on Kwik Engage — “it has helped us solve many of our pressing issues. In just a couple of months, we’ve seen a jump of 134% in abandonment cart recovery rate.”

How this compares to the alternatives

Against Shopify’s own native checkout, the comparison is clean and not seriously contestable:

CapabilityKwik CheckoutShopify (native)
200M+ network address prefill✅❌
COD risk scoring & RTO interventions✅ (70+)❌
India-specific payment nudges (COD → prepaid)✅❌
WhatsApp/Email engagement suite bundled✅ (Kwik Engage)❌

Shopify’s checkout wasn’t built for this market, and it shows — there’s no real argument that it covers any of this today.

Razorpay Magic Checkout is a different story, and worth a more careful look if that’s already in your stack — it’s closer to GoKwik on several fronts than vendor decks on either side tend to admit (address prefill and discount stacking are both roughly at parity, for instance). We wrote a separate, fact-checked GoKwik vs Razorpay Magic Checkout comparison rather than squeeze a fair treatment of it into a table here — read that one if Razorpay is your actual alternative under consideration, not Shopify’s default checkout.

What this actually costs

Worth being upfront about, since it’s easy to assume GoKwik is a drop-in free layer: it isn’t a replacement for your payment gateway, and it isn’t free.

  • Your existing payment gateway charges still apply. GoKwik doesn’t process payments itself — Kwik Checkout sits in front of your existing gateway relationships (PayU, Worldline, Easebuzz, and others) and dynamically routes each transaction to whichever is performing best. The standard PG transaction fee you already pay (typically 1.5-2.5% depending on your contract) is unchanged — GoKwik’s checkout layer is additive, not a substitute.
  • GoKwik’s own platform fee isn’t a published rate card. Their plans are tiered (their “Pro” tier, for example, is what unlocks A/B testing via Kwik Flows) and priced based on your store’s volume — not a flat number we can quote here. We get exact pricing during the GoKwik discovery call, before you commit to anything.
  • COD handling fees are a lever you control, not a cost GoKwik imposes on you. The platform lets you optionally charge shoppers a small COD fee to nudge them toward prepaid — that’s a setting you configure, not something deducted from your revenue.

None of this changes the conversion/RTO math above — it just means the honest pitch is “a checkout layer plus platform fee on top of what you already pay your gateway,” not “replace your payment stack for free.”

One real saving that offsets some of this, though: Shopify charges its own transaction fee (2% on the Basic plan, scaling down to 0.5-0.6% on Advanced) whenever you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments — and Shopify Payments isn’t available in India at all. Quick-checkout tools like Kwik Checkout sidestep this entirely: the order gets injected into Shopify via API as a “draft order marked as paid,” which Shopify’s own fee policy classifies as a manual payment method and exempts. On a ₹10L/month store on Shopify Basic, that’s roughly ₹20,000/month (₹2.4L/year) in Shopify fees you’re not paying — on top of whatever RTO and conversion benefit the checkout itself delivers. Worth knowing this mechanism exists and isn’t unique to GoKwik — Razorpay Magic Checkout and Cashfree Checkout 360 get the same exemption the same way.

Who this makes sense for

Realistically, this is worth implementing once a store has enough COD volume for RTO to be a real line item — not a pre-launch store with no order history yet. If you’re seeing meaningful COD orders every week and you’ve never actually measured your RTO rate, that’s usually the first sign it’s worth a look.

It’s also not an all-or-nothing decision. We typically implement this in stages:

  1. Kwik Engage first — WhatsApp cart recovery and order confirmations. Fastest to set up, no checkout risk, easy to measure.
  2. Kwik Checkout next — once there’s trust in the data, we migrate the actual checkout flow with RTO scoring and address prefill.
  3. Kwik Ship / Return Prime — for stores where logistics and returns handling is the next bottleneck.

What we handle

As a Shopify development agency, our job in this is the implementation: integrating GoKwik’s checkout into your existing theme without breaking your tracking, pixels, or analytics setup; configuring RTO risk rules sensibly for your product category and price point; and making sure the whole thing is measurable from day one — not just “it’s live, hope it works.”

Disclosure: Klickspell is a GoKwik implementation partner, and we may earn a referral commission when we bring a merchant onto their platform — we’re also a referral partner for Razorpay and Cashfree, so this isn’t a case of one platform being the only one we have a stake in. That doesn’t change our recommendation — we only suggest this where the economics actually make sense for your order volume, and we’ll tell you plainly if they don’t.

Curious what this would look like for your store?

If you’re running meaningful COD volume and have never measured your actual RTO rate, that’s the first thing worth finding out. Configure a project scope and mention checkout/RTO in your notes, or book a 20-minute call and we’ll walk through your numbers directly.

GoKwik sells 10 products now, not just checkout — take the GoKwik product fit quiz to see which of the others (Engage, Return Prime, Cart, and more) actually fit your store, and which to skip for now.
